Junior School Learning

Currently the Junior Team consists of around 130 tamariki in Years 0 – 3. We have six classes – two new entrants/year 1, one year 1, and 3 year 2/3. We are a busy, fun and, sometimes, noisy group of Greytown School whānau who all love learning and playing! As part of our school and junior playground we have a sandpit, mud kitchen, large playground with equipment like swings, balance and swinging bars. We also have two large fields and an artificial turf to use for play. School break times are exciting, collaborative and fun; there is plenty to do in a gorgeous environment.

Our Junior Team programme consists of three blocks with literacy and numeracy taking the priority for the first two learning sessions of the day. We use a Structured Literacy approach to learning to read and write which means that during the literacy time tamariki are very engaged and involved with literacy activities appropriate to their level. In all classes there are opportunities to learn through hands-on activities, including play, that support the development of language, social skills and imagination. During the last learning block of the day the Junior Team have a number of different curriculum activities; this includes physical education, science rotations, art skills, music, language and any other learning our tamariki show interest in.

Greytown School provides our Junior students the opportunity to experience a ‘country’ school environment in a busy and lively town community. They are lucky to experience pet days with all types of farm animals, cross country races on a large farm, input and participation from our local community volunteers, marae and businesses.
